First year with PlayStation 5

Exactly one year has passed since the current generation of PlayStation consoles hit the Czech market. Unfortunately, there is still a shortage of supplies, when demand exceeds supply, however, who really wanted a lot or registered a reservation on time, he probably reached the console by this time. Of course, there are more leads in response to rumors about the console’s performance or features, such as the tactile response of the DualSense driver or the upcoming super-powerful exclusive games planned for next year. According to available unofficial statistics, 14.19 million PlayStation 5 consoles have been sold worldwide to date.

While the first year of a new platform tends to be a little weaker for major new games as a strong customer base is formed and developers are still learning how to work with the new hardware, the PlayStation 5 certainly wasn’t dull during its first 12 months. . Surprisingly complex, beautifully nostalgic, and unspeakably “tangible”, Astro’s Playroom served as the best performance of any console in history. Immediately after its first completion, I plunged into the Demon’s Souls remake that night with my console, which is not only near perfect, but literally last winter it was the only game that really looked like a new generation game. But already in the spring, a couple of exclusives appeared in the form of a wonderful action platformer Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart and an unusually deep adult psychological roguelike fiction Returnal. However, if we look objectively at the first year PlayStation 5 games, the Metacritic rating looks like this:

The best games for the PlayStation 5 according to Metacritic:

  1. Hades (93/100)
  2. Demon Souls (92)
  3. Tony Hawk professional skater 1+2 (92)
  4. Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade (89)
  5. Disco Elysium: Final Cut (89)
  6. Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition (89)
  7. Noose of death (88)
  8. It takes two (88)
  9. Ratchet & Clank: Rift (88)
  10. Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut (88)

nixes

Of course, some might argue that certain games on this list were also released for the previous generation or for other platforms in general, but that doesn’t change the fact that they look and work noticeably better on the PlayStation 5 than on the PlayStation 4. Only the loading speed itself The game has a big difference that is easy to get used to, as well as a generally higher fluidity or resolution of the game, not to mention the tactile response of some games. Also, about half of the games in this list are at least exclusive to the PlayStation platform for now, although we can probably hope to release at least some of them for PC sometime later.

The DualSense driver is a key priority for the PlayStation 5.

You’ve heard (or read) this a million times, but it needs to be heard here as well. While having an SSD in the new console is a major improvement for any gaming experience, it certainly won’t leave you with the same strong and powerful “new” experience as the haptic feedback and adaptive triggers in general of the vastly improved DualSense. Driver. Unfortunately, not all games fully support it yet, but for those who really cared about it, thanks to a new way of perceiving the game, its world and interactions in it, they get a much better experience.

Aside from the aforementioned Astro, Demon’ Souls or Returnal, Far Cry 6 is definitely worth picking up, where you literally feel the stomp of your horse’s every hoof, the terrain under your vehicle’s wheels, or the vastly different recoil of automatic weapons of various sizes. With that experience alone, I wouldn’t play Far Cry 6 (or any other multi-platform game with full DualSense support) on any other platform. However, you can also experience the tactile experience on a DualSense controller when playing on PC, if the game supports it. If, on the other hand, I have to name a weakness of the console, I am unfortunately disappointed by the relatively noisy drive, although in general console noise is not as problematic as it is with the PlayStation 4.

PlayStation continues to dominate

PlayStation has long been one of the most popular gaming platforms, especially in our region. However, the success of the fifth generation beats previous records: as we recently wrote, the PlayStation 5 is the fastest selling PlayStation console. So it’s clear that Sony has clearly started this generation, and it’s just a question of how far and where the success of this console will go. It would be good and beneficial for all players if the conditions between the various competing platforms were as balanced as possible, because this would only force each of them to do their best and accommodate the players as much as possible by offering content, services and prices.

Among my acquaintances (mostly hardcore gamers), I see a gradual replacement of their old PlayStation with a newer one, although many of them are still waiting for the “first real killer title” or simply did not have time to reserve in time and do not want to take the extra steps. The worst thing we can do as players in the long run is, of course, to buy from scalpers, because then there will only be more such traders in the future. Personally, I’ve had enough unique games and experiences in my first year with PS5 (led by Demon’s Souls, Returnal, Deathloop and Kena), but next year we’ll obviously switch to a much higher speed as the fully exclusive Horizon : Forbidden West or God of War: Ragnarok look like absolutely indispensable blockbusters.
