Steam Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Deck Traversal Is Fine, Says Developer

While Steam Deck support for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 won’t be coming at launch, players who find other ways to access the game from their devices won’t be banned, according to the studio’s lead developer running the remaster. This is great news for gamers looking to play Modern Warfare 2 on their devices in the hope that the remaster lives up to its legacy and becomes one of the best Call of Duty campaigns to date.

Marc-Alexandre Boulanger-Milo, UX/UI designer at Beenox, suggested that the problem stems from the game’s Ricochet anti-cheat system.

When asked if the game would be compatible with the Steam Deck, Boulanger-Milo replied, “No. Main problem with Steam Deck [that it’s] it runs on Linux, and for the game to run on PC, it needs a kernel driver developed for PC to protect against cheaters… Maybe it will eventually be supported.

However, he also confirmed that while the Steam Deck is unplayable out of the box, players will not be banned from finding workarounds.

The issue appears to be related to SteamOS, Valve’s Linux-based operating system. With cheaters still prevalent in many FPS games, anti-cheating measures are becoming increasingly complex in their efforts to ensure a fair gaming experience. However, this means that some popular FPS games are not compatible with the Steam Deck because SteamOS cannot properly support these in-game anti-cheat tools.

Steam currently lists Modern Warfare 2 as “unknown”, echoing Boulanger-Milo’s uncertainty over whether Beenox can develop the game in a way that takes into account Steam Deck support in the future, adding over 6,000 devices. tested playable games.

Otherwise, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 system requirements do not require modern hardware, and other games with similar specifications are verified as compatible. Fortunately, this means that players can fix this issue by booting into Windows or using other Linux workarounds to get the game up and running without any repercussions.

Another option would be to tell gamers how to configure Nvidia GeForce Now in the Steam Deck to bypass the game’s built-in anti-cheat protections. However, while this is a possible fix, it’s unlikely to be fixed as soon as Nvidia GeForce Now does. does not currently offer any Call of Duty titles on its cloud gaming platform.

The popular space shooter Destiny 2 also suffers from Steam Deck compatibility issues due to its anti-cheat software. However, Bungie takes the opposite approach and said it will ban players who try to force-launch the game on their devices.
