League of Legends publisher Riot Games has acquired Sydney-based studio Wargaming, publisher of the combat MMOs World of Tanks and World of Warships. Now rebranded as Riot Sydney, the studio’s development team will support the existing Riot League of Legends, Valorant, and Riot tech teams.

The studio teamed up with Wargaming about 10 years ago to adapt their “Bigworld technology”, which was used in various MMORPGs at the time, for use in World of Tanks. While this technology will remain with Wargaming, Riot will use the developers’ knowledge and talent to run great multiplayer games, accumulated over the last decade.

New Riot Sydney has been in business for 25 years and is one of the largest game development studios in Australia.

“We are truly impressed with the cultural fit we have experienced in our relationships with everyone at Riot, and look forward to sharing our global development experience with relevant teams,” Naresh “Naz” Hirani, director of development at Riot Sydney, said. “I know I speak for the entire team when I say how excited we all are to be a part of Riot and help deliver an amazing player experience.”

Riot Sydney is now part of the Riot Development Studios organization, led by studio head Molly Mason-Buhl.
