Making an MMORPG is a lot of work. massive after all, it’s right there in the title. So it’s great to see a small independent game development team like Stormhaven Studios announce the imminent release of their new MMO Embers Adrift. Embers Adrift’s release date is set for October 15, and follows a beta testing period open to early adopters of the fantasy game.
Embers Adrift takes place in a land called Newhaven. As a new player, you’ve traversed the treacherous territory known as the Shadowlands, and can once again explore it for treasure, including a powerful alchemical substance called ember.
Stormhaven went its own way with Embers Adrift, skipping some of the standard MMORPG elements like minimaps and PvP. The developers say they have created a unique system for AI and enemy aggression, and it has its own unique approach to kill, seek, wound, and recover.
There is magic in the fantasy underworld of Embers Adrift, and it’s all tied to the ember itself: it can be used in alchemical concoctions and “spells” available to any of the three base character classes, which are divided into nine specializations.
Instead of using an in-game map, Embers Adrift forces players to navigate the environment; you will have to decide where to go using your own sense of direction and navigation.
The base game is available on the official Embers Adrift website and is on sale through October 31 for $29.99 or local equivalent. The monthly subscription costs $9.99 until January 1, after which the monthly price for new subscriptions drops to $14.99.
Embers Adrift is worth seeing simply for the power of its views: the trailer and screens show vast fields of wildflowers, a towering ancient barrier wall stretching to snow-capped mountain peaks, and an ancient forest of huge evergreen trees.
Austin-based Stormhaven says it wants Embers Adrift to be a truly community-driven game and the team is committed to taking players along for the ride. It will be interesting to see where this leads.
