For those who are fans of sprawling pirates, the PlayStation booth has a great surprise: the opportunity to play the One Piece Odyssey demo! The next game from Straw Hat Crew, coming to Playstation 4 and 5 consoles, PC and Xbox Series X|S on January 13, 2023. A demo of about 15 minutes was presented at BGS 2022 for those with the courage and desire. face the lines that have formed to guide Luffy and his comrades in turn-based RPG battles in search of Nami’s traveling companion. There were also a few Elden Ring cars, but the pirate caught the attention of the demonstration room.
Odyssey in the garden of King Kong
The demo didn’t give a detailed explanation of how the misfortunes ended up on this island called King Kong’s Garden, but it did give us control over Luffy exploring the place, with some highlights to see things like a strange family of birds taking care of their cubs or a ship that has run aground. You picked up items around, like HP recovery apples, and used Luffy’s rubber power to jump over chasms, using the aim-and-click mechanic to make him throw his hand and grapple somewhere.
The real attraction, however, lay in taking turns fighting. Because it was a tutorial, you had little freedom in the beginning to explore everything Luffy, Usopp, Robin, Sanji, Chopper and Franky could do, you were limited to using your normal attacks on enemies and using status removal items like paralyzed, injured and passed out when the game told you to do so.
Among these events, scenes of dialogue between characters commenting on the situation, arguments between Sanji and Zoro, and Luffy’s exaggerated expressions and jokes take place to emphasize the characters’ funny personalities.
A flock of birds attacked Usopp and left him paralyzed, so you need to quickly defeat them before the character’s energy runs out. Nami was found and injured, before the start of the battle, use the item to restore her energy. Scroll through the characters and choose the best one to attack the enemy. The actions that needed to be completed before you could even start fighting were the biggest part of the demo. Once you have completed the action, then you can start fighting.
Then the exaggerated abilities of the anime characters begin to showcase the graphic power of the game. Everything is nice and very fluid, but at least in this demo, there is nothing special or revolutionary about Odyssey that sets it apart from previous One Piece games released for the current and next generation. In fact, Odyssey is nothing new and exciting compared to other anime-licensed Bandai Namco titles featured here. Again, at least in this demo.
It’s not ugly or a bad game, and for anyone who loves the Straw Hats team or turn-based RPGs, Odyssey is a plate full. For those who want a little more action, maybe Odyssey is the game you can look forward to when it hits stores.
