Its only saving grace, apart from Valve’s approval, is a special selection of ports, but now Jsaux has released an almost identical version, and much cheaper.
Without hands-on experience, we cannot comment on the performance of the official Steam Deck or the Jsaux HB0702. However, given that Jsaux is currently the best Steam Deck port, it’s worth considering, as the new entry has the same Gigabit Ethernet port, DisplayPort 1.4, HDMI 2.0 for higher resolutions and refresh rates, and three USB ports- To 3.2 (which is actually a small step up from the 3.1 ports of the official port), all for less money.
If you’re wondering what gives, it all comes down to food. Valve includes an AC adapter in its $89/£79 price, while the Jsaux HB0702 is $59.99 without it. Buying the optional Jsaux 45W charger for $19.99 equals the price, though combined it’s still $10 cheaper than the official kit.
Since both docks are compatible with the original power adapter that came with the Steam Deck, you may not even need a second power supply. It all depends on how you use your gaming laptop and whether you want to carry a separate charger with you; after all, nobody likes messing with cables behind their gaming monitor when everything is set up. .
It’s a bit confusing that Valve makes it mandatory given that the idea behind the Steam Deck is to play your way, but it could make the dock cheaper in the future. For now, Jsaux comes with a cheaper option if you can’t afford the full hit. The company even has more powerful docking stations with an NVMe port, so you can use better SSDs, and cheaper docking stations that reduce the number of USB ports (like the one above).
