Skipping the v45 system update and going straight to v46, the latest Oculus Quest 2 Meta patch features several quality of life additions, such as improved privacy settings. However, few could have predicted such an unexpected collaboration with Prime Video’s The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power.
Claiming to be the best VR headset, the v46 update for Quest 2 introduces a new free home environment that takes us under the Misty Mountains, based on the legendary Khazad-dum, the famous underground kingdom of the dwarves, better known as Moria. Rather than being directly inspired by the book or inspired by Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy, this version is based on the location’s appearance in Amazon’s Rings of Power.
However, we advise you to act quickly if you want to explore the realm. The Meta confirmed in an Oculus blog post that Khazad-dum is a home environment for a limited time, and sadly, no end date has been given, so it’s unclear when it will go away. To download it, go to Quest’s “Settings” menu, click “Personalization”, select the “Virtual Environment” tab, and you can switch between different launcher themes.
These are not all the features of v46. In addition to the recent apps tab in the main menu and improvements to search settings, Meta has confirmed its “redesign and optimization of your privacy settings on the Quest platform.” By asking you to re-verify your privacy settings after installation, it gives you control over individual aspects. Now you can choose which friends see you online, which games you play, and settings per app. So if you really don’t want anyone to know that you’re using Beat Saber for some reason, you can hide that activity, but not the others.
This is a welcome update as we await news of Meta Quest Pro (Project Cambria), which will be officially unveiled at Meta Connect 2022. If you’re interested in watching, it will be streamed on the Reality Labs Facebook page. Live with Keynote at 10 am PT / 1 pm ET / 6 pm BST.
