The former Bethesda developer, who has worked on several Fallout games, Skyrim, and the upcoming space RPG Starfield, told us about his upcoming popular horror game The Axis Unseen, which he began development after leaving Bethesda.

Designed by Nate Purkepile, who left Bethesda in 2021 after working there as an artist for 14 years, The Axis Unseen is an open-world first-person shooter in which you use a rudimentary bow and arrow to scout and hunt down creatures. monsters from the vast expanses of our world. people. The thing is, they chase you.

“Just finished another big job, which means the full map now exists. It’s five times the size of Skyrim,” Purkeypile tells us. “Because it focuses on wildlife, you need a lot of space to move around. It’s not about exploring dungeons and stuff. So the game has six different regions that all look different and have their own weather, lighting, and creatures. And that’s what I go to when creating the rest of the creatures.

In the world of The Axis Unseen, you’ll find popular monsters from around the world, and Purkypile says the idea came from growing up near the woods, reading horror stories and playing hunting simulations. “I think [hunting simulators are] an exciting genre in which the combat is very deep, and everything depends on the direction of the wind and the movement of the tracks. But then if something notices us, like, oh, the deer will run away. What if there were monsters instead and you [still] have these deep mechanisms.

All of the popular monsters from around the world originate from one location in The Axis Unseen, and from there they enter our world. Purkepile says that the idea that all folklore comes from one place and that leads to different interpretations and myths seemed like a natural way to tie them together in the game’s open world.

“Why are so many myths really similar? Are there all these different Bigfoot myths around the world? Why?” Ask Purkepile. “It brought me this inescapable thought that if there is this world outside ours where these beings are, and sometimes infiltrate our world, and they are the same, it is because they are from here.

You’ll use a bow and arrow to defend yourself in The Axis Unseen, and you have elemental arrows at your disposal that are effective against some traditions and weak against others. This is where it gets particularly intriguing, as items can be combined with the world for different results. For example, you can create gusts of wind to scale cliffs, which, in Purkepile’s words, “is like a rocket jump, but with a bow.”

Purkeypile didn’t give us a release date for The Axis Unseen, but said development is going incredibly well and its goals are being met quickly. So if everything goes at the current speed, we may be getting our hands on The Axis Unseen sooner than expected.

You can check and add The Axis Unseen on Steam.

We also spoke with Purkeypile in an interview with Starfield, where he discussed how the development of the project went while he was at Bethesda, how the game approaches scale, and what the team needed to do when creating an entirely new universe. .
