The latest development diary for Crusader Kings III lays out ambitious plans for the future of the epic strategy game. The diary covers the ideas and concepts the development team is working on for upcoming expansions and for the year ahead, and there is plenty of exciting stuff for fans. In the near future, it looks like the next Crusader Kings 3 expansion will feature a theme that has never been explored before in this series.

Game director Alexander Altnir explains in the latest dev diary that the team is planning another expansion similar to the one included in Crusader Kings 3 Royal Edition. This included the Royal Court expansion and two flavor sets, Fate of Iberia and Northern Lords, although Altnir states that this formula may change in the future as it is “not set in stone”.

While Altnir says it’s too early to discuss the details of the next expansion for Crusader Kings III, he does say that this expansion will focus on the role-playing aspect of the game, with much of its focus being “reinforcing the bond between the card and the character.”

“This theme has not been developed in previous iterations [Crusader Kings]”, he writes. “To set the record straight, we’re not dealing with trade, Imperial/Byzantine mechanics, nomads, etc. it is weather.”

There are a lot of interesting details about how the team is thinking about some of the long-standing requests and concerns from players. Altnir acknowledges the need for more Byzantine content and admits the team feels they won’t be able to do the “simple” flavor pack justice; instead, these updates will “more than likely” be part of a larger expansion.

As for future goals, Altnir has a long list: he wants to get to imperial mechanics to compete and be part of an empire that’s as fun as being a king, there are improvements he’d like to make to laws and religious systems, and would like to add a completely new system for dealing with the nomadic tribes of the great steppe.
