Original Oculus VR headset gets Meta Quest 2 2.0 hand tracking

It’s been almost three years since hand tracking first appeared on the original Oculus Quest VR headset, but the second generation of the feature has so far been limited to the Meta Quest 2 (formerly the Oculus Quest 2). After a major overhaul in May, two years after the beta release of the experimental feature, Meta finally updated the font support that started it all.

For those unaware, manual tracking is something to consider when looking for the best VR headset. By removing the need for Oculus Touch motion controllers, Quest can detect your hands and fingers through the headset’s cameras, allowing you to directly interact with the user interface. This creates a more immersive VR experience, although the lack of buttons does require some compromises.

UploadVR first revealed that Hand Tracking 2.0 is coming in October for the original mission. When he appeared in Quest 2, Meta previously described these changes on the Oculus Blog, saying:

“Today we are revealing major enhancements to our hand tracking API, the Presence platform’s hand tracking capabilities, including incremental improvements to continuity tracking, gesture support, motion, and performance. This update also enables fast, overlapping hand movements, allows clapping and other hand-to-hand interactions, and opens up almost limitless object manipulation possibilities.

Since May, some of the best VR games have received updates to support Hand Tracking 2.0, including apps like Virtual Desktop, adventure games like Eolia, music simulations like Unplugged, and smaller hits like Vacation Simulator. While the steady growth of the library is encouraging, we have yet to see big titles like Bonelab, Beat Saber, or Half-Life Alyx adopt it.

We will certainly see hand tracking in the rumored Oculus Quest 3 and Project Cambria VR headsets. While the full specs of both are unknown, we’ll likely find out more about the Cambria at Meta Connect 2022. That said, if you want to try manual tracking sooner, existing Quest owners will soon have a few options.
