Can you imagine that you, the hunter, just had a tough battle with Lunastra and still had to deal with the curious Devilillo, and while collecting materials from your loot, a message appears saying that you need to buy the “Materials” DLC to continue “. de Lunastra for only 45 reais? Sounds like what EA would do, doesn’t it? Well, the next Monster Hunter, or at least the next game like it, along with Dauntless, comes from EA, and the likelihood of that happening might not be such a big joke.
EA and Koei Tecmo are teaming up to create a Monster Hunter style game with the recently announced “Wild Hearts”. The two-and-a-half-minute debut trailer features a lush setting, scary encounters, and cool weapons. The game also appears to be based on the monster-hunting Toukiden series by Koei Tecmo originally released on the older generation Playstation Vita and PlayStation Portable consoles. The new game is due out in February.
The trailer for The Wild Hearts shows the wild world of vicious monsters, and the player characters are armed with a variety of armor, swords and strange magical technologies that have a distinctive ancient Japanese style. It shows players approaching beasts in wild arenas, flying at them with cool tech, and usually blowing up beasts many times their size. Monster Hunter fans will be right at home.
EA’s next Monster Hunter looks back at the Toukiden series
In an exclusive interview with IGN, director Kotaro Hirata acknowledged the similarities to the company’s previous monster-hunting series, Toukiden. The experience of making these games laid the groundwork for Wild Hearts, but Hirata stressed that “hunting, combat system, world stage and visual presentation” are exclusive to Wild Hearts.
If you’re new to Toukiden, you’re probably not alone. Created by Omega Force in 2013, the series debuted on the woefully forgotten PSP and PlayStation Vita in Japan, before being brought to the United States by Tecmo Koei a year later. Its sequel moved into the open world format, releasing it on PS3, PS4, Vita and Windows. If you’ve been a fan of these games, this might be of interest to you, although the directors have stated that they hope to reach a wider audience this time around.
Unlike the Toukiden sequel, Wild Hearts will use a “zone system” rather than a fully open world. The game will also offer co-op for three players instead of four, presumably for balance and simplicity so as not to look for an additional player. Craft is an integral part of the experience. Referred to as “Karakuri”, the directors describe their characteristics in the world as “an ancient technology that allows for extremely flexible and creative hunting grounds”, but on a smaller scale than, for example, in Fortnite.
The game has been in development for four years, but so far everything is going according to plan, on February 17 you can start hunting monsters in this wild world. But on what platforms? It’s currently unknown, though PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC seem like the most likely destinations. Until you go to Wild Hearts, the latest version of Monster Hunter, Monster Hunter Rise, has a DLC called Sunrise that sends hunters on the trail of even bigger and more dangerous monsters than before.
