The Nvidia RTX 4080 12GB is currently the cheapest GeForce RTX 4000 series graphics card officially announced by the company, alongside the more expensive RTX 4080 16GB and RTX 4090. the amount of video memory each has, it seems that one card has more performance and more powerful features than the other.
Looking at the “Performance” section of Nvidia’s official RTX 4080 product page, the 12GB model lags behind its 16GB counterpart in all three tests to varying degrees. While the two graphics cards more or less square off when running Microsoft Flight Simulator, there is a noticeable difference in frame rates in games like Cyberpunk 2077 and Warhammer 40,000: Darktide.
Just looking at the RTX 4080 spec sheet makes the reasons for this performance difference clear. The 12GB card not only has less GDDR6X video memory than the 16GB model, but also far fewer CUDA cores and a tighter memory bus. We’ll have to see how these differences affect frame rates outside of these Nvidia-provided benchmarks when we get to the GeForce GPU, but we’ll likely see similar trends in our own results.
To further complicate matters, it looks like the 12GB RTX 4080 will only be available through AIB partners, with the 16GB RTX 4080 being the only one getting the Founders Edition treatment. However, depending on your budget and needs, any Pixel Pusher graphics card may be the best graphics card for your system.
However, if the RTX 4000 series is still too rich for your blood, the RTX 4070 or RTX 4060 could be the way to go, but there’s no indication yet of when Nvidia will announce these cards. For those of you who just can’t wait that long, AMD’s RDNA 3 release date is set for November 3 if you don’t mind putting a Radeon card in your rig.
