Leaving Valorant ranked games early can hurt your MMR chances, says developer Riot, who notes that your competitive ranking in an FPS game can actually go up when you lose. The MMR (Matchmaking Rating) is a hidden rating that is used in conjunction with the visible RR (Ranking Rating) in Valorant to help determine what skill level you fall into in competitive ranked multiplayer modes.
John ‘EvrMoar’ Walker, Senior Competitive Designer at Riot, tweeted some useful information about how MMR works. Calculated separately from your ranked ranking, MMR does not reset between Valorant episodes, seasons, and calculates values based on your “Combat MMR” (how you play against players on the enemy team) and “Win/Loss MMR” ( who you). win and lose games against each other).
The idea is that your hidden MMR will help Riot figure out where you should be each season. So if your current rank is higher than your MMR, you will likely lose more rank when you lose and earn less when you win, because the system thinks your rank is too high for your performance level. The opposite happens if your current rank is lower than your MMR to help you move up the ranks.
All of which brings us to why you shouldn’t quit ranked games early. What walker explains, “Your MMR can increase when you lose! While his RR will drop if he has a very good match, his match MMR can be higher than his win/loss MMR drops. So if you continue the match and try to play big, it will help “mitigate” the loss and increase your personal MMR in the future.
Add that it’s even more effective at lower ranks like gold and lower, where your encounter’s MMR is higher than your win/loss. So “it’s always important to play your best and not give up on increasing your MMR by increasing your RR gain,” Walker concludes. Also, you can earn a shooting partner from Valorant Riot.
