And of course, since this is a PC, the modding community is inundated with those who are in too much of a hurry to change up the device a bit.
While showing off his Steam Deck mod, Reddit user Tengotengo8 created custom back buttons, specifically L2 and R2. A series of images show the work they’ve done to convert the system’s standard black buttons to white.
Many could be forgiven for thinking it was just about changing the color of the buttons, but that’s not what the user did here. Instead, the modder uses a special mold, along with fast-curing polyurethane, to create entirely new triggers. The result is fairly clean white L2 and R2 buttons that offer something different from the standard buttons.

In response to another user’s question, Tengotengo8 said that they plan to do something similar for all Steam Deck buttons. There has even been talk that they might want to sell them. So for those who are a bit sick of black shoulder buttons, you might be able to get some of those white buttons without having to create your own.
Several people have already taken the Valve device and manipulated it to their liking. Some Steam Deck users have replaced their hard drive with a larger one, both in terms of capacity and physical size. This shows that the portable system is no exception to the PC modding community.
It probably helps that Valve supports third-party mods and accessories like the best Steam Deck, because things like that really underscore that it’s more than just a competitor to the Switch. Aside from being able to connect a mouse and keyboard, program your own games, or play games through emulators, modding is just one of the many ways the Steam Deck is better suited to PC gaming than handheld consoles.
