The 2023 AGDQ Speed Race charity event will not be held in Florida next year or anywhere else, although the event will be held in the same manner as it has been in recent years.

The official Games Done Quick Twitter account said it’s hosting this year’s AGDQ online because it wants to provide a “safe and welcoming event” that it says can’t be held in Florida.

The AGDQ 2021 event was originally scheduled to take place at a location in Florida, but following the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the fast-running charity events were moved online. Games Done Quick then cites Florida’s harassment of LGBTQ+ people and lack of COVID-19 vaccination mandates as reasons they don’t want to hold the event in the US state next year.

Of particular note is Florida’s “Don’t Call Yourself Gay” law, which was enacted earlier this year and prohibits discussion of sexual orientation or gender identity in elementary classrooms, putting an end to these discussions around the little kids.

Games Done Quick then clarifies that it cannot cover the costs associated with terminating the contract with the Florida facility and moving to another location with a personal presence at another location. Next year, therefore, the AGDQ will be online from January 8 to 15.

“While moving online will save us costs, we will still have to recover significant costs,” adds Games Done Quick in Twitter. “We are committed to restoring it where possible, including community support through Twitch subscriptions. We thank the community for their support!

The AGDQ has been working remotely since 2021, with the Summer Games Done Quick benefit event returning in person after a two-year absence from Minnesota earlier this year.

Last June, SGDQ raised an incredible $3.01 million for the international charity Médecins Sans Frontières with over 120 sprints demonstrating technical skill and the use of the game. With this event, the total fundraising for the GDQ collection since 2010 has exceeded $40 million.
