Plague Tale’s Requiem Rats obey you, but they’re still terrible

Plague Tale Requiem’s ​​rats bite a bit more than their Innocence predecessors, bringing even more fur, fleas, and fear to the already iconic rat game. Since plague-infected rodents were scary enough in the first game, how did Asobo make them even scarier? Lead level designer Kevin Pinson does the talking.

Following the success of Plague Tale: Innocence, Asobo decided to add another chapter to the sad story of Amicia and Hugo in the form of Requiem. A few months after the events that plunged the brothers into darkness and despair, they learned a few new tricks for the Requiem, Hugo most notably. While playing at Gamescom 2022, he learned that a five-year-old boy had perfected his ability to communicate with rats by bending his terrible power to his will.

From enemies to allies, the Rats in Plague Tale Requiem are very different from their predecessors. Pinson sat down with me to discuss why.

“We wanted to expand on what was in the first game,” says Pinson. “We wanted to give Hugo that ability because it’s just a natural extension for him. The events of Innocence have taken their toll on him and he has better control of his powers.

“That doesn’t mean I’m in complete control,” however. “Requiem is really about that feeling of Hugo trying to break control of him and sometimes losing him in the process. It’s really a balance between Amicia and Hugo trying to find the best way to help each other.”

The rats themselves have also grown, as Pinzón says: “Building on the way you control the rats in the first game was a big challenge for us because we really liked the mechanics. Sorry we didn’t make it to the end, this time I think we did.

“We asked, ‘How can we make rats the most dangerous creature in the Plague Tale universe?’ The game systems make them more aggressive: they can follow you, they can climb, they can fall. We went from 5,000 rats on the screen to 30,000, so, much the rats. For big events like the tsunami, we’ve wanted to do this for a long time and now we have the technology to do it.”
