Youtuber Makes a Steam Deck Budget of $30, Give or Take

A YouTuber has created a $30 Steam Deck alternative, and a cheap makeshift gaming laptop is better than you think. While its creator describes the handheld platform as “sketchy and cheap,” it’s surprisingly functional given that it costs less than a recently released game.

Partnered with a budget gaming PC enthusiast, impromptu budget builds steam bridge actually an old windows tablet. The creator turns a low-spec device into an artificial bridge by combining it with a “strange and rare” Microsoft-certified Xbox controller dock and using a great image from Steam that somehow mimics Valve’s official handheld experience.

Budget Builds admits that the low-spec tablet isn’t quite as slick as the Steam Deck, and its specs aren’t quite the patch for the actual portable offering. However, it can run old favorites like Skyrim and Minecraft without turning into a slideshow, an impressive feat considering its Intel Atom processor and 2GB of RAM.

The budget Steam Deck certainly lacks hardware power, but it’s actually possible to play Red Dead Redemption 2 at 1440p using the device. Capture? Well, you will have to take advantage of cloud gaming capabilities by streaming games from your gaming PC. It may sound like a loophole, but it could technically compete with upcoming handhelds from Logitech and Tencent.

Naturally, if you’re looking for a portable powerhouse that can easily run the latest games, we’d recommend buying a genuine Steam Deck. Valve just got over the pending pre-orders, so you probably won’t have to wait long to get one.

However, Budget Builds’ experience speaks to the viability of low-spec gaming as a platform and as a hobby. Of course, even your grandmother won’t be fooled into thinking this is Steam Deck 2, but it would be nice to see more alternatives like this in the future.
