Just a few days before Gamescom, Capes was announced from new studio Spitfire Interactive. However, the team as such is not entirely new, as most of the staff worked on the roguelite RPG Hand of Fate and its sequel under the Defiant Developments banner. However, this time they tried themselves in a slightly different genre, Capes is a turn-based strategy in the style of the famous XCOM. I was able to try out one of the first missions at Gamescom and I can already say that the game made a good impression on me.
The game takes place in a city captured by villains twenty years ago. They have created a dystopian city where the use of superpowers is a crime, and so far no one has been able to stop them. But everything changes when a group of superheroes called the Capes, which we take on in the game, rise again.
Moving on to the gameplay, the title does not deny its inspiration at first sight. Reminiscent of XCOM not only in basic mechanics, but also in user interface, for example. Closest to a spin-off subtitled Chimera Squad from 2020, where you also play as pre-determined heroes and save the city. So I could stop there and call Capes a simple copy of a more famous brand. But it’s not.
Unlike competitions, there is no limit to two actions per turn. Each hero has a number of action points that can be used as you see fit, creating a completely different dynamic. However, the biggest strength of the game lies in the characters themselves. They are very different not only in their approach to combat, but also in their movement. For example, one of the heroes can teleport.
Then each character has several attacks, some of them are ranged, others are melee, and each has a certain characteristic. However, the most interesting is their combination, which plays a key role in Capes. If two heroes are close to each other, they can make a special combo. It brings a whole new level of tactics to relatively classic gameplay.
In between separate battles, you can train heroes with new abilities and choose from several missions. But that’s the part that I fear the most, because if that’s all we’re going to do between fights, it’s too much.
But let’s see, the developers still have enough time to add some content. The game will be released sometime next year, by the way, it will take about 20 hours. So far, only the PC version has been announced, but the developers told me that they are thinking about a console port as well.
