Aliens: Fireteam Elite DLC lets you take on the alien queen

The lesson of the new Aliens: Fireteam Elite DLC, Pathogen Expansion, is that you have to be careful what you wish for because you can get it. Developer Cold Iron Studios says it’s heard from fans asking to fight the alien queen co-op, and that’s exactly what they’ll be doing in the Pathogen expansion.

The new DLC, which is available now, adds a new story campaign that begins right after the events of the main game’s fourth set of missions. Pathogen takes place on the planet LV-895 and consists of three missions in which the marines investigate the strange behavior of xenomorphs as they move in large herds through a large complex of canyons. There is a reason for this, and that reason is probably not the right one.

As previous campaign events have shown, xenomorphs are altered by a mysterious pathogen that transforms them into pale, enhanced forms. The Pathogen expansion adds four new xenomorphs to the game. There is a Pathogen runner that is more or less an armored version of the standard xenomorph. He is bigger and tougher, but slightly slower than his vanilla cousin.

Then there’s the fading pathogen, lurking in the shadows, similar to the main game’s stalker variant. It releases bowls of exploding slime from a giant hole instead of a head, so be careful where you step. The Pathogen Brute is exactly as advertised, it uses its huge mutated fists to smash enemies (meaning you and your squad) into a thin red mass. However, it hits hard enough to unleash shockwaves that damage nearby enemies, so use that knowledge to your advantage.

Finally, there is the queen of pathogens. This alien queen isn’t tethered to a massive immobilizing ovipositor, which means she’s on the hunt and ready for battle. She has a “heavy outer shell” combined with a long tail covered in sharp spikes, so she keeps her distance while shooting.

Fortunately, the expansion also adds a huge selection of new weapons, gear, and perks to use in battle, as well as a new set of cosmetics to keep you looking great on the field.

The Pathogen expansion for Aliens: Fireteam Elite is now available on Steam.
