Roblox players have millions of options to customize their avatars, but as of August 26, the platform only had one Roblox cosmetic headset available in the platform’s sandbox avatar store.
Blake Cadwell, CEO and founder of hearing health company Soundly, noted the lack of cosmetics for hearing aids, noting that there were over a thousand options of glasses in the Roblox store for comparison. Cadwell, who began using hearing aids at the age of 30, quickly embarked on a mission to strengthen the platform.
“When the more than 50 million kids who play Roblox every day look for headphones on the platform, they should see designs that highlight their platform’s personality in a bright and colorful way,” Cadwell shares on his blog.
In a blog post, the Cadwell team notes that hearing-impaired children rarely see hearing aids in hardware stores, high-end stores, or on celebrities. He pointed out that due to the lack of representation, it appears that hearing loss is rare, when in fact it is not. The World Health Organization estimates that 34 million children worldwide are deaf or hard of hearing.
The Soundly team collaborated with Day One Agency and the Roblox 0929 lego 3D modeler for the launch of the new line.
“We wanted the collection to be as fun as the Roblox community, and we wanted the design to be bold and unapologetic,” Cadwell explains in the post.
The team considered many ideas before settling on six headphone design concepts, which 0929lego then brought to life on the platform.
By offering bright and colorful headphones for sale as an accessory on the Roblox Marketplace, the team aims to send a message that supports diversity and inclusion for people with hearing loss. Some of the options include Pink Fuzz, Smiley, and Lightning Bolt.
“It’s time to talk about hearing aids for what they are. Powerful, cutting-edge assistive technology that helps millions of people hear better every day.
The headphones are available in the Roblox Avatar Store for 50 Robux each.
The line’s hours are consistent with the landmark ruling that allows Americans access to over-the-counter hearing aids. The decision could also lower the price of hearing aids for the 30 million people who can wear hearing aids.
