By far the most popular mode in modern sports games is the trading card mode, and NBA2K23 MyTEAM is no exception. It seems that very little is added each year in terms of variety of games, with most depending on updating the list and finishing. However, this year 2K Sports has released a number of changes that will be a welcome surprise to anyone who regularly enjoys the basketball simulation.
The curse of my MyTEAM experience was that the players were always on the field: it wasn’t enough to create your team, you had to fill each player with “contract” cards. These consumable cards were harder to find than they should have been and cost a fortune to buy from the menu. That being said, I’m personally happy to see that 2K has done away with contract cards altogether, which means your players are your players and there’s nothing stopping you from always being in the top five.
One of the unique features of MyTEAM is the Triple Threat game mode. A stripped-down version of the traditional 5v5 basketball antics we’re all used to, it instead has three players on each side, with no reservations as to who you want on the court. This is a much faster, arcade version of the standard game. This year, 2K introduces a co-op version of Triple Threat so you and your friend can dominate 3v3 gameplay.
Finally, job-based roles have been added to MyTEAM. Usually when you play Career Mode in NBA 2K, you control one player, your player, and that’s the only thing you control on the court. In the end, you will have a very good understanding of your player, his complexities, strengths and weaknesses, as well as a deeper understanding of the position he is playing. With position-based roles in MyTEAM, you can take that deep knowledge of that position and put it to use in multiplayer. Does he only know how to play base? No more problem, just let the AI crash.
NBA 2K23 is scheduled to release on September 9, but if you can’t wait that long for a competitive patch, check out the best PC sports games you can play right now. If you want to play this year’s NBA, there’s still time to get it on Game Pass, along with other absolute gems.
