Browsing through the storied horror franchises of the slasher era, a few killers come to mind: Voorhees, Kruger, Myers, and Leatherface. What about the killer clowns from outer space? Unlike the aforementioned Hall of Fame slasher, The Clowns never made it past a single movie, with many sequel attempts getting bogged down in development after the 1988 original. somehow they get the official video game. And as a horror game, it sounds amazing.
With Friday the 13th: The Game CEO Randy Greenback at the helm of development, there’s a rich pedigree behind this iconic revival, but he does want to point out that 2017’s multiplayer was far from perfect. “There are things that just didn’t work,” Greenback tells us, “so we’re fixing what didn’t work and making it better here, but we’re also expanding and innovating what worked.”
According to Greenback and Bogotá-based developer Teravision, one of the big issues is the pressure these games put on the killer. Since the killer is the only threat, everyone’s enjoyment of a game depends on their ability to build tension: if experienced, survivors don’t feel like they’ve had a chance, but if they’re less familiar with the game, then survival. it’s too easy. In Killer Klowns, three killers face off against seven survivors, so the work of creating fear is more evenly distributed.
There is another nuance: not all human characters are under the control of the player. This means that if you are killed by a Clown, you will respawn as an NPC in the world, allowing you to fully invest in the outcome of the match even after several kills. Sure, the Clowns will eventually deplete the map’s population to the point where there’s no one left to respawn, but the result feels like a real slasher sequel: more blood, more death, more action. . Greenback says the game will build on that even more, offering challenges that reward teams of clowns for using as many different finishing moves as possible.
Just like in the movie, the clowns don’t just kill people – they want to capture them by trapping them in cotton candy cocoons and taking them back to their mother ship. This is very similar to how the killers use grappling hooks in Dead by Daylight and ensures that the survivors have a chance to defend themselves before dying forever. And the survivors can even outsmart the clowns by infiltrating their spaceship and disabling their reanimators – there are a few steps to take before they can start wreaking permanent havoc on the clown population, but that’s one option for the equipment.
Humans and clowns belong to different classes, with humans differing primarily in the degree of utility or lethality they bring, and clowns noted for their wacky gadgets and abilities. For example, Spiky, a class of trackers, can inflate a balloon dog to track survivors, and if you’re too far away from them, you can jump into an invisible car and run with the balloon dog on your lap. This is crazy nonsense at its best.

As you would expect from any modern multiplayer game, Killer Klowns plays out as a service game with seasons already planned, new eras, and new locations. “We expect it to be a long time,” says Greenback, “and we have a lot of content planned, even after the first season.” And while Friday the 13th: The Game fell apart pretty quickly after release (mainly thanks to an intractable legal dispute over intellectual property rights), there are a few Killer Clown sequels that never saw the light of day, and US Dollar working with the filmmakers. originals to bring these ideas to life. “We take the best notes they have, tell them about it, and then add those things as the game goes on,” says Greenback.
You can add Killer Klowns from Outer Space: The Game to your Steam wishlist right now, and expect an early 2023 release date.
