YouTuber says fake Roblox events are a serious problem

According to Roblox YouTuber SharkBlox, fake Roblox events could pose a major problem on the sandbox gaming platform. These events initially seem legal, but their developers have come up with clever solutions to force users to spend Robux on avatar items as part of the experience, even if the items don’t actually exist.

In a video posted on August 24 titled “Roblox fake events are becoming a big problem…”, the content creator investigated Twitter user statement who purchased a counterfeit item during an event within the platform.

The remote experience for the event in question was disguised as the Chainsmokers Roblox experience. This type of event is entirely possible as Roblox recently hosted concerts for various musicians including George Ezra, Twenty One Pilots, and rapper Denzel Curry in an event called Guacathon.

A YouTuber joined a fake event to show how gamers can be tricked into buying items they think are genuine. In the video, SharkBlox notes that the game had over 1,100 active players at the time of recording, illustrating the potential depth of the problem.

SharkBlox then purchases an item that looks like a real accessory but is actually a game pass, meaning the player does not receive the purchased item. Upon further investigation, the YouTuber realizes that the documentation for the transaction is linked to an experience called “The Untitled Game,” which houses all parts of the game in the fake event experience.

SharkBlox says they reported the fake event multiple times and urged Roblox to take it down, but they were still able to access it to take a video. The YouTuber also pointed out that the lack of clarity regarding purchases during the experience could be an issue, as the scammers behind the event could make it appear that the player is purchasing a legitimate item. They suggest that Roblox could benefit from differentiating game pass purchases from item purchases to help people be careful not to purchase actual avatar items.

SharkBlox notes that this style of event scam is relatively new, but reports that they have seen other events with a similar structure in the past. There is currently no obvious way to distinguish a genuine Roblox-sanctioned event from a fake event designed to trick people into spending Robux. Although there are indications that these games may not be what they seem, the player must know what to look for when assessing the reality of an event.

Roblox has moderation methods to prevent users from creating experiences just to trick players, but even then, content that initially seems legal can still stand up to scrutiny.

While the metaverse should be a place for everyone, it’s worth considering whether there should be a verification system and accompanying badge for the Roblox experience from legitimate businesses and brands, though that might affect the visibility of unverified events. . As the metaverse continues to grow, developers will likely continue to create more copies and other fake events to trick people into buying fake items.
