In A Plague Tale: Requiem, gameplay is closely tied to character development.

Asobo Studio went to great lengths to link the character development of A Plague Tale: Requiem with the style of play, Lead Level Designer Kevin Pinson spoke to PCGamesN about the upcoming rat game ahead of its October release. Hugo and Amicia’s story is not just about survival. It’s a struggle to balance Hugo’s growing control over his rat powers with Amicia’s desire for them both to lead normal lives.

As Hugo expands his powers, he gains a degree of independence and attempts to use his powers to help Amicia, sometimes with disastrous results as he always loses control. Meanwhile, Amicia struggles with practical needs to protect herself and her brother in a hostile world, and it takes its toll, says Pinson.

Despite what Amicia went through in Innocence, or perhaps because of it, Amicia refuses to incorporate violence into her life and tries to avoid it at all costs. Pinson says that Amicia suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder after the events of Innocence, and that we should expect the effects of this to play out throughout Requiem.

On a practical level, this means that even with her combat experience, Amicia refuses to train as a soldier or even make fighting and killing a part of her life unless absolutely necessary. Instead of wandering through medieval Europe with an arsenal of weapons or even a few essentials, she must find what she needs to survive, including the materials to craft arrows and other weapons.

Pinzon also says that means A Plague Tale: Innocence isn’t an action game, though a recent trailer for the game may suggest otherwise. There’s plenty of room to experiment with your fighting style and weapons of choice, but Pinson says you shouldn’t expect Amicia to become a master combatant. As an example, she mentions a crossbow. It is a powerful weapon, but difficult for her to control.
