Brace Yourself Games has released a new Rift of the Necrodancer trailer for Gamescom, and the sequel to Crypt of the Necrodancer looks a lot like a game where life meets rhythm. Instead of focusing on rhythmic adventure like its predecessor, Rift of the Necrodancer splits into several modes, including one we weren’t expecting.
The first is the aptly named Rift Mode, which pits Cadance against a broken version of herself on a screen that looks a lot like Guitar Hero. It’s the game’s story mode, or so it seems, as Cadance fights to close the rift and bring back his friends, who were apparently drawn there after it opened and monsters spread across the world.
It sounds exciting, and we’re big fans of the comic book style that features Cadance and her friends and enemies.
But above all, the minigame mode caught our attention. Brace Yourself Games said that’s where Cadance wrestles with something even more brutal and complex than rift monsters: the challenges of everyday life. We see how Cadance strives to learn yoga and do it well in class, and other challenges of “modern life” will also have their own mini-games.
Rhythm games generally span a wide range of styles, from the original Rhythm Heaven approach to more traditional rhythm-based games and even RPG-based Elite Beat Agents games. However, until now we haven’t seen a rhythm game that embraces the life simulation genre, mixing gameplay with the things most of us do on a daily basis.
It’s amazing considering how well it pairs with Necrodancer’s Rift, and we can’t wait to see more in the coming months. The game’s Steam page doesn’t have a release date yet, so it looks like we’ll have to wait a bit before we can experience it for ourselves.
