Starfield, The Callisto Protocol, and the Dead Space remake have all spearheaded a renaissance in space gaming, but Deliver Us Mars, the sci-fi adventure sequel to Steam hit Deliver Us the Moon, currently on display at Gamescom 2022, wants offer something very important. another focused on scouting and surprise rather than shooting and combat.

Speaking at Gamescom 2022 for PCGamesN, Raynor Arkenbout, Narrative Designer on Deliver Us Mars, explains how the game will break into the increasingly popular space genre.

“I mean, obviously we’re a little worried that there are so many,” says Arkenbaut, “but I think it makes sense that there are so many space games out there. I think we are now in a period where we are fascinated by space. So I’m not really worried in the sense that we’re all engrossed in the subject and its arena.

“We love the Callisto protocol. I can’t wait to play it. But our game will definitely not be about wars, shooting and the like. We are definitely on our side of the stage. Basically, the game will be about something else, story-driven drama. It will take a completely different fantasy.

As well as focusing on storytelling and problem solving, Deliver Us Mars also has some nifty mechanics that make rock climbing and crawling through difficult Martian geography seem like a lot of work, as its two climbing spikes are controlled independently. . This is not Assassin’s Creed, where jumping and running can be controlled by holding down a single button. If you don’t want to crash to death, you need to carefully time the location of each ax and switch between different keys. Having such a mechanic in place is one of the reasons Deliver Us Mars has been delayed from its original release date.

“We were doing very well,” Arkenbaut says, “but I think we looked and felt that if we give ourselves a little more time, we could really achieve the ambition that we keep talking about. This is lacquer. I think these few months will really serve the game better and people will be happy with that. I will be happier It was a difficult decision, but I think it is the best decision that can be made at this time. I’m a gamer myself and I think every gamer in the world needs a developer who says ‘let’s get this over with’ and not just kick them out.”

Deliver Us Mars will be released on February 2, 2023. In the meantime, you can try some of the other best space games, or maybe some of the best upcoming or survival games on PC. PCGamesN reports live from Gamescom 2022 and will continue to bring you exclusives for all the top games featured there.
