Moonbreaker is a new strategy board game announced at Gamescom 2022 Opening Night Live. It comes from Unknown Worlds, the team behind the popular underwater survival game Subnautica. In what can only be described as a love letter to miniature board games, Moonbreaker asks players to team up and battle it out in Reach against AI and other players as they fight for control of a valuable resource known as Ashes.

The turn-based strategy game will initially ship with over 50 custom digital models, with more added with each in-game seasonal event. Players build a small army consisting of a captain and up to ten other minifigures from three different factions who will be present. at launch. You can also select “Ship Helpers”, powerful off-map abilities that can give you an advantage in combat.

Each match will only start with your captain. Most matches require you to take out the opposing captain, and board concepts like cover are also featured in the game. Moonbreaker will come with competitive PvP, as well as an AI roguelike called Cargo Run.

Perhaps the coolest feature is the model drawer. Moonbreaker comes with over 50 templates, each with a default color scheme, but you can also apply your own custom color scheme. Unknown Worlds worked with professional tabletop game modellers to test this system, and the level of detail and complexity available is, quite frankly, very impressive. We doubt the game will sell itself, but it’s the game that comes closest to recreating a tabletop fantasy in digital form.

When it comes to final bells and whistles, Unknown Worlds wants to strike the right balance. Everything available in the game can be unlocked through gameplay: you must earn in-game currency to purchase items in the shop, ranging from premium alternate model skins created by professional fashion artists to “boosters” for all models new ones released, and anything else the team comes up with.

Moonbreaker will be released on Steam Early Access on September 29.
