World of Warcraft Shadowlands is now free

Every time a new World of Warcraft expansion comes out, it gives me a huge MMO FOMO; the opportunity to return to the former glory of RPGs is certainly a tantalizing prospect, but sometimes the cost of entry for such an endeavor is too high. That said, Blizzard has announced that you can get the World of Warcraft: Shadowlands expansion for free, right now, with a character level boost of up to 50 for good measure.

With Dragonflight on the horizon, now seems like a great time to release those macros and catch up on what you’ve been missing. From now until September 5, you can get a free copy of the Shadowlands expansion, as well as level up your character to level 50 to start playing this content right away.

How to get a free copy of World of Warcraft: Shadowlands

  • Open the Battle.net desktop app and sign in.
  • Click the gift icon at the top right of the app, next to the bell icon.
  • In the confirmation window, find your gifts and click the “Receive” button.
  • Start WoW and create a new level 50 character.

This freebie from Blizzard has some limitations; Battle.net accounts that do not have a previously released expansion attached to one of their accounts are not eligible for the giveaway, and those who already have Shadowlands on one of their accounts are also not eligible.

It sounds like Blizzard is trying to get into that dead player sweet spot by trying to bring him back into the ranks so that they’ll hopefully buy the Dragonflight expansion when it releases in December.

All in all, it’s not a bad day if you’re a former World of Warcraft player. Free stuff is always nice, and if you like what you see, there’s plenty of WoW content waiting for you later this year, and Dragonflight promises to be one of the best. Have you heard that you can pet a dog? You can pet the dog. 10/10 from me.
