When you’re up against a group of Redfall vampires in Arkane Austin’s upcoming FPS game, there’s no question how to deal with them: you have to take them down. The developer shed new light on Redfall’s take on vampires and vampirism during a panel at QuakeCon 2022, explaining that these vampires are very, very bad people, and always have been.
“The vampires in our game and the vampirism they have is not a disease, it’s not an accident, it’s not something that can be cured,” said Ricardo Bare, creative director of Redfall. “The people who become vampires in our game were already, in a sense, vampires on the inside. It’s more of a metamorphosis than a disease they contracted.”
Arkane has previously explained that Redfall’s version of vampirism, while retaining many of the traditional vampiric characteristics we all know and love, is a man-made phenomenon. It all starts with a group of extremely wealthy people looking for a technological solution to eternal life.
“They’re not innocent people you’re trying to save,” explains Baer.
“It was the vampires who wanted this to happen to them. They wanted to live forever, even at the expense of others,” says study director Harvey Smith. “Even if it requires other people’s blood. They are terrible monsters.
Vampires in Redfall are divided into several different levels, and even the lowest vampires will be dangerous enemies. Several named vampires will be the minor bosses, and above them are the vampire gods, creatures so powerful that they managed to push the water around the island and trap you and your friends in Redfall. These vampire gods, according to Arcane, serve as chapter-breaking bosses in the game.
However, the common enemies are the followers of the vampires: these are people who long to be vampires, but for whom the vampires have other plans. Vampires can “modify” them for a variety of purposes, including as “blood bags” that produce huge blood-filled boils for vampires to “stick” to when thirsty.
Arkane calls Redfall his “most ambitious game to date”, suggesting a lot of it comes from the studio that released Dishonored and Prey.
We don’t have a release date for Redfall yet, but earlier this year Bethesda announced that Redfall had been pushed back to 2023 with Bethesda’s upcoming Starfield RPG.
