Tree Sentinel is the first boss Elden Ring players will encounter when traveling between the Lands Between, but that doesn’t stop him from becoming an enemy. Most players won’t be able to handle the riding hazard the first time they encounter it, requiring several levels before hitting it.
But if you’re ready to take on a wooden sentry, here are some tips on how to approach the fight.

Tree Sentinel is particularly resistant to damage, fire, net damage, frostbite, and blood loss. If you can, you’ll want to target him with lightning strikes. This could mean using Lightning Grease, which is relatively rare and not available until the end of the game, or adding Battle Lightning Ash to other weapons.
Perhaps the easiest way to fight a wooden sentry is to use mounted combat if you plan on using attacks. Sitting becomes much easier when you mount a horse, flip a wooden guard or two, then ride until you can get your revenge. This strategy only becomes more effective in its second phase, when attack zones become particularly difficult to circumvent.
Alternatively, you can fight the arborist on foot. If you choose to do so, you must learn his attack animations. There are only a few, and they can usually be avoided by picking up the gun at the right time. (Shield attacks you want to dodge.) Most halberd attacks are punishable by one or two hits. Try to stay on your weapon because the shield attack is very fast and hard to hit.
If you want to be as careful as possible, hit him once after each attack and then jump. This will make it nearly impossible for him to punish your swing.
This warning is even more important in the second phase, where his massive shield one-hit knocks you out at any time. If it goes through the air, be sure to throw it away as soon as possible.
If you attack from afar, this fight becomes much easier. Push him off the horse while he’s in range, shoot or cast a spell, but far enough he’ll be unable to respond. The only trick is not to cast spells on its shield while it glows while projecting your attack at you.
