The Age of Doom mod has received a major update from its creator, adding a playable Arachnotron with his own campaign episode to the classic FPS game, as well as general improvements to the rest of the game. 2 lets you play Doom in the AoE II game engine using a point-and-click style of gameplay that will be familiar to fans of ARPG games like Diablo.
Now, the version 1.25 update of the mod introduces a new campaign called “Spider”, where players take control of one of Doom’s most feared enemies, the Arachnotron. A giant cybernetic spider monster first introduced in Doom 2, the Arachnotron is a giant brain with eyes inside a robotic shell with four spider-style hydraulic legs and a front-mounted plasma cannon.
In addition to the new campaign, the v1.25 update also includes additional visual improvements, additional sounds, new units, as well as gameplay improvements and bug fixes for all previous installments. We never tire of the unique ways to play Doom, and while running the 1993 classic on everything down to a small brick Lego monitor is satisfying enough, developers trying to take a unique look at the formula are always refreshing.
The Age of Doom campaign has its own unique story behind Doom, Doom II, and even Doom 3, and lead developer Hellknight61 says its goal was to emulate the slower cinematic pace of games like Half-Life. Interestingly, they add that the new campaign is “inspired by Super Mario Bros”, giving Arachnotron the ability to jump and warp with some combat abilities.
If that prepares you for old games, we have some of the best classic games on PC to suit your needs. Meanwhile, Doom co-creator John Romero is creating a new first-person shooter powered by Unreal Engine 5. If Age of Doom sounds like a simple action game to you, fans have remade Doom RPG for PC.
