New real-time strategy game Tempest Rising looks like a modern Command and Conquer

Command and Conquer games are cold-blooded classics, but it’s been a while since we’ve seen Tim Curry’s Anatoly Cherdenko get excited about space travel. Fortunately, the upcoming real-time strategy game, Tempest Rising, looks poised to revive that particular formula of crisp real-time strategic combat punctuated by slightly cheesy FMV-style story scenes.

Tempest Rising, shown during THQ Nordic’s digital demo, is “a classic base-building real-time strategy game set in a modern alternate history military setting,” says THQ Nordic. In Tempest Rising, three factions fight over a valuable but volatile alien resource called Tempest, reminiscent of the Tiberium from the original Command and Conquer games.

Here is the trailer:

“Immerse yourself in epic campaigns or challenge your friends to multiplayer matches,” says the brief description of THQ Nordic. Story missions seem to be highlighted by cutscenes directly inspired by the first Command and Conquer GDI and NOD briefings, and buildings rise up from the ground in their designated areas, just like in the classic Westwood RTS.

THQ Nordic and 3D Realms are publishing Tempest Rising, which is being developed by Slipgate Ironworks in conjunction with 2B Games, developers of the Viking Ancestors Legacy RTS medieval game.

Tempest Rising will be available on Steam and is expected to launch in 2023.
