Following the briefing on financial results for the first quarter of 2023, Sega Sammy’s Vice Presidents Koichi Fukazawa and Makoto Takahashi answered some questions asked by investors.
One of them is whether the company is considering postponing the launch of Sonic Frontiers to improve it by leveraging feedback from players and the press. The answer was:
“At this point, we do not intend to delay the launch. In our communication with users, we intend to evaluate aspects that can be evaluated during the development period and to gain the empathy of the public. Sonic is a very important IP that we will sell. It will be long-term in the future and we will continue to strengthen it from next fiscal year.”
Sega executives later hint that one of the reasons the company isn’t considering delaying Sonic Frontiers is to capitalize on the film’s wave of success. Sonic the Hedgehog 2.
“We have high expectations for Sonic Frontiers, the main game in the series scheduled for this winter.” Sonic game sales increased with the previous movie and the licensing business was also positively affected.
“We expect the same impact on the last movie, which was more successful than the previous one, and we want to see a positive outcome for the new game as we work to expand Sonic’s IP.”
As many will know, Sonic Frontiers didn’t make a good impression on a large slice of gamers who wanted a delay to allow the developers to work on the game’s critical issues. In July, Takashi Iizuka, president of Sonic Team, stated that there would be no delays.
Sonic Frontiers is currently available on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X | The S is in development for Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC, and its launch is scheduled for late 2022. The game will be featured on Gamescom 2022 Opening Night Live.
