Elite Dangerous 13 update introduces a new alien threat phase

As Elite Dangerous players enter the space game starting today, they will witness the disastrous results of the Proteus Surge, a superweapon designed to destroy the menacing Thargoids that have been threatening the galaxy since their arrival. Update 13 for Elite Dangerous kicks off a new chapter in the story called Aftermath, and it looks like there are a lot of pieces to pick up.

As you can see in the trailer below, Salvation’s attempts to finish off the Thargoids in one fell swoop failed disastrously. If you go to the HIP 22460 system, you will find the wreckage of the Bright Sentinel and Heart of Taurus megaships in the Anti-Xeno Conflict Zones near where Proteus Surge was activated. Salvation, by contrast, is absent from action.

However, you must be vigilant: these conflict zones are full of Thargoids, and any Sentinel technology installed on your ship will be compromised in this system. Modules quickly degrade and can even be destroyed.

Aftermath is a new chapter in the Elite Dangerous story, with the conclusion of the Azimuth saga, quite tragic, one might add. However, there is a lot of bright light on the horizon. Frontier has announced plans to move all Elite Dangerous players to the 4.0 codebase that runs Elite Dangerous: Odyssey.

The base game is currently at version 3.8, while the 4.0 version used by Odyssey has seen many improvements over the years, as well as a general graphical upgrade. In the near future, Frontier will announce its intention to unify the two code bases under 4.0. You will still need to purchase Odyssey to experience the game content in the upcoming story, but other general game enhancements in 4.0 will be available soon for all PC players.
