On August 5, it was announced on the Roblox Developer Forums that the company was showcasing its live animation creator in a massive beta version of a sandbox game. Previously, Roblox animation required keyframe animation, which meant developers had to painstakingly render each frame to achieve accurate animation, combining them with inverse kinematics to control joint rotations of the avatar and FBX files that render 3D models.
However, Live Animation Creator now allows players to upload videos of their movements, which the tool can then pair with an avatar to create a custom animation.
Since the announcement, the inhabitants of Roblox have jumped at the chance to upload videos of their most ridiculous moves. At first, players started with basic moves, like the one where a Twitter user Sleitnik experimented with a series of moves.
Since then, Roblox residents have tested the feature by uploading dance music videos like one with the song “Attention” by NewJeans and another with Fatboy Slim remix of “Body Movin'” by Beastie Boys.
And of course as the robloxians will never let us down, they will never let us down, someone had to make an animated version with some rick astley classic.
However, few can top the recreation of the avatar dance at the end of the Super Mario Bros. Super Show. 1989 with Lou Albano as Mario. Discord user trodge originally posted a video, which was later posted as part of YouTuber KonekoKitten’s video praising the update.
And while Robloxians mostly animate dances to popular songs, there are plenty of opportunities for developers to create unique RPG animations and recreate popular memes on the platform.
This feature is currently in beta, so users may encounter bugs or other issues while experimenting with the features.
According to the blog post announcing the tool, the Roblox development team encourages people to do the following when using this new feature:
- Keep the camera still with a person in your video
- Make sure your entire body is well lit and visible throughout the video.
- Keep the video as one continuous image
For those hoping for even more variety in how they can use the tool, the Roblox dev team says they may increase the length of the animation in the future. If that happens, we can expect a lot more custom Roblox animations to appear on platforms like TikTok and Instagram. The team is also working on reducing the number of keyframes, which will allow users to have more control over their animations.
This feature is only available on R15 avatar platforms, which are different from R6 platforms. R15 teams divide the avatar animation into 15 parts, while R6 only allows six.
