Destiny 2 Season 18’s Iron Banner Adds ‘Eruption’ Killstreaks

After experiencing the Rift Mode resurrected from the original Destiny, Destiny 2’s Iron Banner will be moving over to Clash this season, but with a significant change. There are now plans to add a new system called Eruption to multiplayer, which increases tension and strength for each kill in an uninterrupted streak.

In the latest This Week At Bungie article, Lead Designer Alan Blaine explains that Eruption is coming in Season 18 to highlight kill streaks in Destiny 2 PvP. The new mode is essentially Clash, but with a new mechanic that boosts Guardians as they take down a series of enemies without dying.

Kills in Eruption, like in Clash, are usually worth one point. You will also receive a “normal” amount of energy for knocking down an opponent. However, if the Guardian kills a second opponent without dying, he becomes a “half moon”. Guardians will glow slightly while moving, and kills will generate 10% super energy, as well as 20% grenade, melee, and class ability energy. When the Guardian gains momentum, he gets three points for each kill.

Once a Guardian achieves five kills in a row, they are “charged”. These players will start to shine brighter and their entire team will go “hunting”. This status means that all team members gain 5% super and 10% grenade energy, melee and class, while a trained guardian gains 12% super and 5% grenade energy, melee and class.

However, there is a compromise. Primed Guardians also have a 15 second timer and if it reaches zero they will explode, dying instantly and resetting their streak. You can reset the timer to 15 by getting another kill, but while you’re being charged you’re also marked – everyone on the other team can see where you are and they’ll all shoot at you, as you’ll be worth three points if you take them.

Blaine says that Bungie has learned some lessons from the release of Iron Banner’s Rift this season, so Eruption will initially be available in a low-pressure setting at Crucible Labs before moving to the main stage of the Iron Banner event.

Meanwhile, the Rift will switch to the normal Crucible Rotator and will be available in Weeks 1, 8, and 14, as well as in Private Matches. With the start of Season 18, Rift will also introduce “more standard” overtime rules.
