Stray and its feline mechanics have captured the hearts of cat fans everywhere, especially since your lovable ginger companion can literally earn achievements just for a cat. Following the success of the game, in a new video, feline behavior expert Joanna Puzza (Cat Welfare Manager at Battersea Dog and Cat Shelter) reveals just how realistic the game is.
Resounding success with animals and humans, the Annapurna feline adventure, wanderrose to the top of Steam’s list of the highest rated games of 2022, beating out games like God of War in the process.
Characterized by puzzles, adventures, and neo-dystopian landscapes, players were quick to praise the game’s main antagonist, the adorable red-haired cat.
But does Tramp’s cat really act like real cat? In an interview with Gamespot, a feline behavior expert revealed if our orange companion could get away with hiding in the real world.
When the game opens and we see our group of friendly cats for the first time, Puzza notices that their behavior is very similar to real stray dogs.
“It looks like this guy is playing a little game with his friends,” she says. “I guess it’s a miniature wandering colony, and all of these cats (except one) are red and white, which is very common in wild colonies, because genetically they’re all very similar.”
As we progress through the game, she comments on the accuracy of the now-iconic photo of the musical robot Morusca (who was instrumental in deciphering the vagabond’s language) playing while the cat snuggles up next to him.
“A lot of times you can see cats curled up like this and pretending to be asleep. This means that they don’t actually fall asleep, they are always very alert and that’s because they are both predator and prey so they need to be aware of their surroundings. His ears are alert, he listens to what is happening in the immediate vicinity.
However, she notes that the occasional sleepy meow was “probably added for cuteness,” so Stray has some creative leeway.
Be sure to watch the full video and you can also donate to the Battersea Dog and Cat Shelter while you’re there. If Puzza’s review convinced you to give the adorable animal adventure a try, be sure to check out the best Stray settings for PC and Steam before diving into the game.
