Winnie the Pooh may be one of the most beloved children’s characters of the century, but that won’t stop the creators of the Roblox games from desecrating the lovable bear’s legacy. A studio has shown a sneak peek of the Roblox Experience featuring a carnivorous version of good old Pooh the Bear.
Wonder Works, the studio that primarily develops games for Roblox, has released a sneak peek of its upcoming horror game titled “Wow” via Twitter July 29. The short clip features the sound of someone begging another to stop punishing others, to which a familiar Pooh-esque voice ominously replies, “They’ll be so delicious with my fresh honey.” A glow-eyed bear figure appears next, giving players a glimpse of the game’s main character.
Winnie the Pooh went public on January 1, allowing the public to use characters from the original story in their creations. Being a beloved staple around the world, it was only a matter of time before someone jumped at the chance to reimagine a child character as a deranged beast.
Horror games with a sinister version of anthropomorphic or nostalgic characters are not uncommon. The popular television series Five Nights at Freddy’s features animatronic creatures similar to Chuck E. Cheese’s mechanical gang. More recently, horror fans discovered Huggy Waggi in Poppy Playtime, in which players must escape from a toy factory while being chased by a monstrous creature. With so much excitement surrounding the juxtaposition of childhood nostalgia and the horror genre, it’s no surprise that the team at Wonder Works took inspiration from their predecessors in bringing the psychotic bear cub to Roblox.
The game seems to be inspired by Piggy, one of the most popular Roblox games. Piggy, which has been visited over 10 billion times by Robloxians, was originally intended to be a parody of the Peppa Pig franchise. Faced with legal problems, the creator of the game, MiniToon, copyrighted content removed to bring the game to life. The Quest Room features large toy characters who follow trapped Robloxians and must solve puzzles to escape to safety. The game also features several in-game Easter eggs and even won the Bloxy Game of the Year award in 2021.
The next Pooh game is the latest from Wonder Works, which also developed Overlook Bay and TIMMEH!, made in collaboration with YouTube streamer KreekCraft. While most people consider Roblox games to be simple with poor graphic fidelity, Wonder Works breaks the mold by pushing the boundaries of game design and graphic quality on the platform. This approach is in line with Roblox’s vision of giving creators the tools they need to develop more complex and graphically rich games, which is also an incentive to reach a larger audience. The company recently released a set of new material textures and layered clothing options for avatars.
Coincidentally, an unrelated horror movie, Winnie the Pooh, is also in development, according to Variety. In Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey, Pooh and Piglet go berserk.
