All Phasmophobia ghosts have a number of unique abilities, most of which have been memorized by players. Some leave fewer traces of their presence, others are more likely to hunt you in the dark, and one can even use the abilities of other ghosts. What none of them can do is affect the front door, except during the hunt, when it automatically locks, or so we thought. During a recent in-game investigation by Reddit user IgneousWrath, they got caught between trying to decide if the ghost was Yurei or an Oni, without the help of the glut of ghost events.
The turning point was when Yurei used her unique ability. Yurei greatly drains someone’s sanity, then randomly closes or opens the door, and in this case, it was the front door. IgneousWrath showed his setup that the hallway to the gate was clear and checked that the surrounding gates were in the same condition as before the event.
Without a doubt that was Yuurei’s ability. The team did not test her sanity, but the sounds of the door interacting and the sound of the delay closing completely matched Yuurei’s normal behavior.
That IgneousWrath made this discovery is a phenomenon in itself. Yurei’s ability only works on area gates. Even on a small map, there’s still a good chance that Yurei will end up in another room (bedroom, bathroom, basement, pretty much anywhere except the hallway by the front door) and a random chance that it will be any other nearby door. .
It’s impressive that even though Phasmophobia is approaching its second birthday and has a decent following of players around the world, it still has a few secrets to hide.
As far as I know, Yurei is the only Phasmophobia ghost that can actually affect the front door. It’s possible that other ghosts with abilities that randomly affect the environment could also have an unexpected influence, but for now, if an entrance starts to behave strangely, you know exactly which disembodied presence may be to blame.
There’s also no shortage of new discoveries planned for the horror game. Phasmo’s next update will add a new hideout map with themed areas and customizable difficulty options.
