League of Legends heals developing nerves

Ever since the League of Legends durability update, healing has become a hot topic. With all LoL champions now naturally healthier and critical injuries reduced, most players find the healing to be overkill. Facing a champion like Aatrox after 12:13 and seemingly no replay can be frustrating.

In a message dated July 30 Lead Designer Matt “Phroxzon” Leung-Harrison addressed the healing situation and hinted at some changes. “A satisfying healing mechanic tends to be frustrating for opponents,” Matt begins on the blog. “Watching an enemy heal from your damage and survive is often frustrating.”

The post explains how Riot intended to create champions that had healing as a primary stat (like Mundo, Aatrox, Soraka, etc.) and those that had it as an add-on (Nami, Irelia). Matt explains a situation where improving durability and nerfing serious injuries caused a pick like Irelia to outweigh almost all of the opponent’s damage simply by being aggressive instead of relying on her W ability to mitigate some of the damage in order to of survive.

For all but the Irelia Network, it’s not a very rewarding gaming experience, and players can sometimes feel powerless against their immortal opponent. Matt goes on to state that while they believe healing is an inherently enjoyable part of the game, there are a few exceptions that can benefit too much from it, redefining the core identity of these champions.

Serious wounds are also in a strange state after the last few patches; effectiveness was reduced, but healing was increased across the board. This means boosting something like an Orb of Oblivion is now a common thing in Summoner’s Rift, albeit with reduced boost. Because of this, players are frustrated with having to buy an item that no longer works like it used to, giving some champions less room to express their items and innovate their own builds.

As of patch 12.14, Riot plans to “remove some of these unusual heals and continue to tweak the heal to better meet designer and player expectations.” So don’t worry, the top lane monster Irelia will no longer push you into the fountain every 10 seconds!
