August is set to kick off with Steam’s Survival Game Festival, which aims to offer a variety of current and upcoming survival-themed PC games. Valve says that it plans to introduce a range of games that fit into the survival genre, including survival horror games and open-world survival games.

The Steam Survival Fest is scheduled to take place from August 1 to August 8 at 10am PT / 1pm ET / 6pm BST. Valve states that “in participating games, survival should be a core game mechanic.” It highlights “the emphasis on using defensive tactics to stay in the game against destructive forces, including nature or supernatural beings.”

Included games will be promoted on the Steam home page, just like other similar events like Steam Next Fest. Games are not required to offer a discount to participate in the festival, although Valve states that “discounted games will appear on the Steam Survival Fest page.” Demos of upcoming games are also welcome.

Valve also provided a list of gameplay mechanics that they think best represent the type of game they want to showcase. Among the things they consider appropriate are games that include defensive gameplay; an adversity that the player must overcome; health and resource management, such as hunger/thirst; conflict between various groups or individuals trying to survive; and simulations or games with survival elements such as “NPCs attacking or damaging the environment from which the player must seek shelter.”

A list of games ineligible for the event was also provided, including “games where the primary goal is to harm others,” such as Battle Royale and MOBA games, multiplayer games, and MMOs with no specific survival element. . and horror or tower defense games that fall outside the survival banner.

The new rules, which take effect in September, prohibit the use of superfluous text in game art on the Steam store. The open prerelease queue also received changes in Steam Labs to make it more suitable for platforms like the Steam Deck. Meanwhile, Valve has confirmed that all of its pre-ordered Steam Decks will ship in 2022, so anyone hoping for a handheld should get their hands on one soon.
