Cities: Skylines has mechanics, precision, detail – you feel like an architect and urban planner. But it lacks, if you will, flavor. Building roads and digging foundations is fine, but it’s not as exciting as lasers, robots, and a flying city like BioShock. That’s where Sphere – Flying Cities comes in, a dystopian sci-fi construction sim that seamlessly melds these seemingly disparate games, and now has a new trailer and confirmed release date on Steam.
Sphere: Flying Cities entered Early Access in October and has already impressed us with its mix of simulation and survival mechanics, as well as a clever new take on the city-building genre. After the apocalypse and the destruction of Earth, the last remnants of humanity have managed to escape to the last safe place left, not under water or among the stars, but above global destruction in an anti-gravity force field. High in the sky.
Your task, as the commander of this last city, is to keep everyone alive. Debris from natural disasters and meteor showers continue to rain down on your colony, so the anti-gravity shield must be maintained at all costs. However, some buildings and people are less important than others, and you are often faced with the difficult choice of saving the many and sacrificing the few.
It’s a smart reversal of the typical dynamic of building sims where the focus is on growth and the goal is to grow bigger and bigger. Sphere – Flying Cities is more about hanging on, trying to conserve what resources you have left, and making the best of a dire situation. You can play Early Access now, but the full game will be released on September 20 on Steam and GOG.
