The launch of the Intel Arc Alchemist GPU has already been plagued by delays and tight release schedules, but new information has emerged that could make the choice even more difficult. While it is to be expected that the blue team will implement the latest display standards found in the best graphics cards of its competitors, unfortunately that is not the case.
During a recent Intel Arc GPU demo, the company revealed that while DisplayPort 2.0 will be present on all A-series graphics cards, things are much more complicated with HDMI 2.1. In short, board partners will need to incorporate a PCON (protocol converter) chip into their designs that will allow HDMI 2.1 signal input through the pixel pusher’s DisplayPort input (presumably via a DP-HDMI cable). .
If you’d rather not look at the specs to confirm whether or not the Intel Arc GPU has a PCON chip, Intel says its limited-edition A770 and A750 models will be first.
It’s not clear why Intel took such an intricate approach, especially as HDMI 2.1 ports are appearing more and more on the best gaming monitors. While the DisplayPort 2.0 inputs will help soften the blow, the RDNA 3 and RTX 4000 GPUs will likely support both, making Team Blue’s graphics cards feel like the latest generation in some ways.
