The Sims 4 update is out, bringing the high school years to the game! Although it may not be, at least not yet. EA’s latest expansion and Maxis Life game has several issues, some more serious than others. Some of the major issues arose with the addition of wishes and dreadlocks in the free Life update, and need more work from the development team to fix. The many additional challenges that come with the High School Years expansion are slightly different.
The Sims 4 subreddit is full of posts with people displaying blank UIs, missing dialogs, and furniture and housing catalogs with *DEBUG* instead of item names or placeholder text. One user even made a collage of tasks, most of which consisted of missing text.
These issues are reported as easy to resolve. Reddit user Feizeit said the issue appears to be due to the game missing a string pack, which in the usual sense means there is no code telling it to display text in certain areas. Other users said the folders weren’t there and they couldn’t take his advice, but the PLAY magazine writer Dashiell Wood seems to have found a solution.
It seems that the missing text phenomenon mostly affects the Steam versions of the game. Wood says you can open the EA Origin app and it should check the files, adding the missing string package in the process.
However, this still leaves quite a few non-text related errors. The Social Bunny app allows people to increase their friendship levels with other Sims simply by repeatedly sending friends messages, while a larger issue appears to affect the end of the school term. A player posted a screenshot where the game shows their sim graduating and dropping out at the same time. This is a potential problem, as dropouts have far fewer career options.
Other much more serious issues include the aging bug, which causes Sims to age each time you move between screens, and the incest bug reported by Kotaku, where the wishing system randomly assumes your Sim wants to be closer to other Sims. members of the family.
