You think you know the Civ 6 map well, then something like this happens. Reddit user Kyfigrigas looked at Civ 6’s huge Earth map icon and noticed what the rest of us may have taken for granted about the game’s 4X icons: there’s a giant landmass in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. . Some fans have taken it upon themselves to explain what dry land really is, with amusing and predictable results.
Theories range from Old Zealand to “Azores on steroids” to the usual theories like Atlantis. It has even been suggested that Lemuria was considered by the mythical terrestrial zoologist Philip Sclater to be the place where life began. However, Sclater would be a bit disappointed by this suggestion, as he suggested that Lemuria existed under the Indian Ocean, quite far from the mid-Atlantic.
One even speculated that it was a Fortnite island, but another more plausible speculation is that it must refer to the Mid-Atlantic Shelf, which does exist, albeit in a slightly different form than the Civ 6 map patch.
Firaxis may have planned or is considering adding Atlantis as a playable civilization at some point, but it’s also not the first time certain map icons have appeared with some unexpected quirks. In 2021, another Redditer user posted an image of a map with the same mass as the actual starting point map, though something more unusual happened, namely a giant arrow-shaped blue ocean crossing central Europe.
Maybe the map icons just need a little update.
