A hacker has released four gigabytes of internal documents revealing personal information about the creators of Roblox after a successful phishing scam, according to Vice’s Motherboard. Roblox said a group of cybercriminals targeted a specific employee in a ransomware attempt against the platform, which is valued at more than $68 billion and has around 50 million daily active users as of the end of 2021.
The documents appear to contain personal information related to the creators of Roblox, such as email addresses, although Roblox has not revealed how much the criminals are demanding in return or how the company plans to fix the problem.
“These stolen documents were obtained illegally as part of an extortion scheme with which we refuse to cooperate,” a Roblox spokesperson told Motherboard. “After learning of the incident, we responded quickly, hired independent experts to supplement our information security team, and put our systems in place to detect and prevent such attempts.”
The statement also says the hackers used “highly tailored scare tactics” to obtain the documents, believed to be 4GB in total.
This outage is the result of ongoing security talks in the metaverse, including Roblox’s own efforts. to ensure the safety of its users, most of whom are children, according to a Reuters report. These typically involve withholding in-game interactions, but the company has shared less about the steps it takes to protect its creators.
Because Roblox allows users to create their own experiences on the platform, many Roblox creators are young and ambitious developers. However, the teams behind the biggest projects on the platform are much larger and some of these projects can generate up to $50 million per year.
