When the Quake Remaster was released in 2021, it was noted to include a free Nintendo 64 port. However, the first console port of the FPS game was for the Sega Saturn and included new levels and a different graphics engine. Now fans are trying to bring the Quake Sega Saturn port to PC in all its weird glory.
Quake was ported to the Sega Saturn by Powerslave developer Lobotomy Software in 1997 and had to reverse engineer the less advanced Powerslave engine, giving the port a unique look and even more Doom-like sprite-based weapons. It also features four original levels that have never been ported anywhere else.
Fans are now transferring the Sega Saturn Quake to PC as a proper source port using FTEQW. PCGamesN spoke with the project manager @JacyErisdren, who explained that he has been working on it since September 2021 and has recently made “tremendous progress”. All level data can now be “successfully transferred from all game levels” using Blender and the FTEQW source port when iconic game enemies are in transit.
The port will contain all the unique levels and even the weird Dank easter egg and Scuz, a Quake comic with voiceover hidden in the Saturn version. Regarding the value of the port, Jaycee says that “porting Quake to the Saturn is extremely interesting” because Lobotomy Software is under “a lot of pressure to deliver products on time” and yet releases Powerslave with unique ports of Quake and Duke. nyukem 3D
Jaycee believes Lobotomy’s work “is worth remembering and can be played on modern hardware without emulation. I do my best to make it a direct port of your game, without compromise and without any freedom. I want to present it in the best way possible.” While the final version will be playable on the PC version of Quake, Jaycee has also written additional code to make it look like the Saturn version at will, “with a low-res screen and original weapon sprites (yeah! , sprites!) instead. of 3D weapons for PC.” Earthquake.

As for when the Sega Saturn Quake PC port might release, Jaycee “has no idea when it might be ready or when it might release but I’m working through all the level data pretty quickly so hopefully they can get more info there soon. Of course, you’ll need a copy of Quake PC to play it.
When it’s done, hopefully you’ll be able to see the Saturn port in Slipseer, the new home of the Quake mod on PC. You can even play an early demo of the Quake GBA test port if you want, from the developer who officially ported Doom to the SNES.
