WoW Dragonflight Alpha Preview: The New Life World of Warcraft Needs

As the curtain falls on World of Warcraft’s divisive Shadowlands expansion, WoW Dragonflight appears to be the saving grace the franchise so desperately needs. Here are our thoughts on our alpha preview of the game.

I haven’t had much reason to dive into World of Warcraft lately. Scorched by the chaos of the Shadowlands and still grieving that my all-time favorite antagonist, Sylvanas Windrunner, was sent to the Maw due to narrative decisions she couldn’t control, returning to Azeroth wasn’t too tall for me. to-do list.

WoW Dragonflight, however, definitely piqued my interest. Another one of my longtime favorites, Alexstrasza making a spectacular return, and an all-new Draktir class letting me live out my dragon fantasy, there’s a lot to be excited about.

While many were a little skeptical about Dragonflight’s announcement (WoW has a long history of gameplay that doesn’t quite live up to its cinematic trailers), our Alpha Adventures (our version is a bit different than the one now live) They gave me new strength. ; in complete contrast to the hangover of despair that followed Shadowlands.

Wait, can you play as a dragon?

Once upon a time, when I was young, I wanted to be a dragon. Odontology? It’s not correct? Bored. He was going to be a dragon when he grew up.

Although this is unfortunately not possible in real life, it is possible in WoW Dragonflight. The all-new Draktyrs are a beautiful breed with tons of customization options to really show off your personality.

You have complete freedom of action in both dragon and human form, and you can customize every little thing to your liking. From the tips of the horns to the claws of the feet; there is so much to discover.

After spending about an hour in the character editor, you enter the exciting world of Azure Span with all your evocation skills. Since the Evoker is WoW’s first foray into the mid-range class, it takes a bit of getting used to. Your range isn’t as great as a mage’s, but close combat isn’t exactly what you’re after, not that your enemies care.

The new “charged” abilities also take practice, as we’ve never seen anything like this in WoW. I admit I canceled or delayed them too long, but once you get the hang of them they add a whole new element to combat, making Draktyr one of the most dynamic races in the game today.

Young Lauren’s dreams have finally come true. She has to be a dragon and the boy feels it wonderful.

Riding dragons is the best pastime.

The French Riviera is a beautiful glass paradise, but there’s no better way to see it in all its glory than by riding dragons. A new feature exclusive to Dragonflight and its respective zones, you can customize your own scaly companion and soar through the skies of Dragon Islands.

Not only that, you can pull off some amazing stunts. The barrel rolls through the air, falls to the ground, and returns at the last moment; It vaguely reminds me of that level in Spyro: Year of the Dragon where you were skateboarding. The difference is that you are Spyro and the skateboard is a very large dragon.

I can’t tell you how much fun this system is and I encourage you to give it a try right from the start. It’s new, innovative, and just plain cool, something we haven’t seen in WoW in a long time.

What we haven’t seen in a long time are fantasy-style areas filled with wonder, magic, and mystery. While the alpha only includes Azure Span (the third main area of the game), it’s enough to keep you hooked.

Combining the majesty of Zandalar with the coldness of Pandaria, the Dragon Isles are simply stunning. This place, teeming with flora and fauna, feels otherworldly yet welcoming, unlike the desolate plains of the Maw.

Spending hours learning its secrets does not seem like an arduous task, in fact it is quite the opposite. You want cross these magnificent landscapes. You want meet the locals.

And that’s just one area. There are four more (and possibly a fifth, at first glance), and if so, they’ll be just as impressive.

It is going well ?

During my travels, I haven’t noticed too many bugs or glitches. Spells are well cast, I’m not stuck on anything, and everything seems very polished.

Quests start and end as expected, NPCs behave quite well; Dragonflight has a polished feel to it that I think was lacking not only in previous expansion tests, but in WoW in general.

I only found a bug with a random shirtless NPC lounging in the air in the middle of the impressive Azure Span tower. While I hope it doesn’t take a step in the wrong direction (or in any direction at all), it’s a bit awkward (as well as fun) in a wonderfully designed world.

Everything in Dragonflight feels unique. Much love and care has gone into creating a world that echoes old Azeroth, the Azeroth we dream of visiting again.

Gone are the cobwebs and creepy world, replaced by lush foliage and a truly beautiful world. As we get closer to launch, I can’t wait to explore all that Dragon Islands has to offer.
