Samsung is developing the world’s fastest GDDR6 memory for next-gen GPUs

Samsung is preparing 24GB GDDR6 DRAM, and the new modules will help expand the capabilities of next-generation GPUs. The company says its new memory will be “the first GDDR6 memory capable of speeds of up to 24 Gbps” and offers “universal compatibility for widespread market adoption.”

In the press release, Samsung talks about the benefits of its new 24Gbps GDDR6 modules and how they will improve the best graphics cards. According to the tech giant, the new design offers “30% faster speeds than the previous 18Gbps product” and is faster than the GDDR6X components used in Nvidia GeForce RTX 3090 Ti.

Combined with a 384-bit bus, the 24 GB/s memory can provide more than a terabyte of bandwidth for GPUs and other devices. For context, GDDR6X lags a bit behind this achievement, as it is capable of reaching 1008.3 Gbps.

The timing of the announcement suggests that next-gen GPUs like the Nvidia RTX 4090 and AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT may use 24Gbps GDDR6 memory. Naturally, this could drive up the prices of next-gen graphics cards, so we’ll likely see lower-spec options like the RTX 4080 and RTX 4070 that meet today’s standards.

Of course, we will have to wait and see if any RTX 4000 or RDNA 3 cards with 24Gbps GDDR6 memory show up sooner than expected. Although it seems highly likely, Nvidia and AMD are still keeping their next-gen GPU specs under wraps.
