Steam Deck naturally stands out in the portable gaming PC market due to its manufacture by Valve, but SteamOS also gives it a unique identity compared to other portable powerhouses. However, we could see other competing devices switch to this operating system in the near future with optimizations from its creator.
GPD, maker of Steam Deck rivals like Win Max 2, says Valve reached out earlier this year to assess whether the company was interested in using SteamOS instead of Windows 11 on its latest handheld device (via Videocardz). While GPD “has agreed to this collaboration,” he notes that it could be “six months” before we see any sign of an operating system on its laptops.
In fact, Valve needs to optimize SteamOS for AMD Ryzen 6800U installed on Win Max 2, as the OS has so far been primarily designed with the custom Steam Deck APU in mind. GPD also hopes to promote its portable systems on the Steam store, which will be possible when they are deprived of Windows and could lead to devices from other manufacturers ending up there as well.
Optimizing SteamOS for other APUs now could give Valve some practice ahead of its Steam Deck 2 release plans, which could feature a much more powerful Ryzen 7000 processor with improved integrated graphics.
